Leave Lauenen via the main road to the south, soon branching off in a southwesterly direction to the Chrine pass. After the pass, the trail leads through the Saaligraben rift down to Gsteig, the stage destination.
From Lauenen post office, take the main road for around 500m into the valley. At the signpost for Kapeli, turn off to the right and cross the Louibach stream using a narrow footbridge. First take a footpath and then a road on the gentle onward incline. A meadowland path takes you to the ski lift hut on the pass. A road leads to the right over the stream. Then turn left and continue uphill across marshy terrain on a dirt track, in parts covered with boards. In the sparse woodland, the steep trail leads to the wooded Chrine pass between Höhi Wispile and Walliser Wispile. A beautiful view into the Gsteig valley and over the mountains between the Sanetsch pass and the Pillon pass opens out. From the pass, head over the meadows down to the highest alpine hut. Here, the alpine trail turns to the left at the Usser Saaligraben rift and leads steeply downhill. Far below, the trail opens into a road. Follow this road for only a few metres before turning left onto a footpath that then follows the edge of the wood and the Inner Saaligraben rift down to Gsteig. (Schweizer Wanderwege).
Natural and cultural heritage
Gsteig The two equally large villages of Gsteig and Feutersoey belong to the community of Gsteig, together with the surrounding populated area. Gesteig is mentioned for the first time in a document in 1312 under the name Chätelet, which means lookout/defence tower. The tower was erected by the Lords of Raron to protect the Sanetsch trail. On the old site of the castle, it is only possible to see the ruins of this construction today. However, the Gsteig local coat of arms shows the tower of Raron and the crane of the Greyerzer, the later ruling lords. The church built in the year 1453 is consecrated to Saint Theodul. In the tower hangs the Joderglöcklein bell, a gift from the Bishop of Sitten. Inside the church, there is a carved moulded ceiling, a late Gothic baptismal font and a richly decorated baroque pulpit (1713). Bible quotations are painted on the walls. The Bären inn built in 1756 has a wooden structure on a stone base floor (Ständerblockbau). Its facades are richly decked in carved and painted friezes. The central area of Gsteig is listed in the federal inventory of localities deserving protection. (Schweizer Wanderwege)

Mountain Girl - 2011-11-28
Gsteig has an old school building that serves as bunkhouse to groups, but it must be reserved. Tourist office in Gsteig can help. There are 3 hotels in town, 2 of which were closed on the Tuesday I was there in Aug 2011. I continued to the Hotel de Sanetsch at the pass (see following stage) and was glad I did.
