From Chiappera the trail heads down briefly along Maurin Valley only to climb up the steep slopes westwards again. The route is along an old cart road to Grangia Pausa, and then along a trail. The crossing into France is made via the Sautron pass, a very mineral landscape, and then the trail heads downward through pastureland to the stopover village of Larche, rebuilt after the war.
From the Sautron pass, head down on the left along the marked national GR® (long distance) hiking trail and GR® 500 into the pastureland, leaving the Viraysse shepherd’s hut at the bottom of the valley on your left. Continue on, crossing a stream and walking over a ridge that opens out onto the little Rouchouse valley. Walk down along the glacier ledge until reaching the fork in the trail (altitude of 2,091m) of the trail that runs to the left of the Gypière pass. Keep heading down along the right-hand bank of the Rouchouse stream. Before Larche, at about 1,900m in altitude, then take trail GR® 5 towards the right coming from the Mallemort pass. Head downhill along it to reach Larche.
