Another way to do this section is to stay at Rifugio Alpe Baranca, just south of Lago di Baranca. It is a wonderful refuge, with excellent food, kind hosts, a beautiful view, and much cheese, milk and butter coming from their own cows and goats.

Ganz tolle Gastgeber. As I wrote in stage D12: Instead of staying in Santa Maria, def. further to Alpe Baranca hike and stay there. From Alpe Baranca over the Colle d`Egua after Carcoforo. On the Colle d`Egua great bivouac, clean, 7 from 12 beds were occupied with mattresses and a wonderful sense of calm. Gas cookers and water resources available. Not to forget: a small and a large Bialetti and fresh coffee. Rifugio Buffalora had closed, but there were a winter room with two very clean beds. Great Rifugio, invites well for longer rest. In Carcoforo can camp (camping available) or go up in very great Posto Tappa "Hotel Alpenrose" from. Everything was just great. So warm and intense, we have long since ceased to receive. For this purpose, all freshly cooked and served with love. Quite delightful hosts. (Hotel Alpenrose, Via Tetto Minocco 12, 13026 Carcoforo (VC), TEL: +39 0163 95646)

Challenging Summit hike (T3) to the Cimonetto (2480 m): 100 M below the Col d ' Egua (coming from Baranca) in the boiler to the right (North) on the marked trail towards Balma. Shortly before the pass, follow some way traces left. At the edge of the gravel field right pathless on the saddle. Keep left and on the grass band steeply between the rocks on the Summit Ridge. Sensational views of Monte Rosa.
