Passo Muratone
The Muratone pass leads to the ridge between Val Nérvia and Val Roia. An old road between Pigna and Saorge (Saorgio) cuts through here. In the middle age sit was used mainly by shepherds from Briga to go down to the sea in the winter. South east of the pass are the thick Gouta woods, containing the most extensive silver fir populations in Liguria (Gouta-Testa d'Alpe-Valle Barbaira Nature Reserve). The vast Gouta woods are home to a rich variety of wildlife, including the Eagle Owl and the Black Woodpecker. Slightly east of the pass, along the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri dirt track, is the Muratone hut, a restored barracks.
