Historical and architectural information:

The Fort of Vinadio must be considered as one of the most significant examples of military architecture in the whole alpine arc. The fortress’s building works, wanted by King Carlo Alberto, began in 1834 and ended only in 1847. Despite a short break from 1837 to 1839, in just eleven years a real engineering and military technique masterpiece was created; at times, about 4000 people were employed for its construction.
The fort, skirting the village westwards, was never the setting of important warfare; from the pillbox’s rock to the Stura river it is 1200 metres beeline long. The route, snaking on three walking levels, is about 10 kilometres long and is divided into three fronts: Higher Front, Attack Front and Lower Front.
Nowadays, thanks to Regione Piemonte’s contribution, the Comune of Vinadio and Marcovaldo Cultural Association are committed to promoting and improving the fortress with the aim of recovering what went lost in the long years of defection.
